Sports Massage

If you dance, cycle, run, play football or rugby in fact any type of sport you can benefit from sports massage. Sport massage works on a deeper level in the tissues and includes neuromuscular techniques and stretching to help improve performance.

There are four types of sports massage:

pre-event sports massage: short, stimulating massage 15 - 45 minutes before the event to increase circulation and prepare the athlete for the event.

post -event sports massage -- given within an hour or two of the sporting event to help the body calm down

restorative sports massage -- given regularly to allow you to train harder and with less injury. Here the therapist will focus on the area that is under constant use. A constant build up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves. It is overuse that often creates problems and imbalances in the soft tissues. If these are ignored and allowed to become chronic, they will start to hinder performance and may be the cause of developing more serious conditions. Undertaken regularly as part of your training routine this massage can help to prevent sports injury

rehabilitative sports massage -- aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and helping the body to heal. Here the therapist will focus on the problem area -- a frozen shoulder or pulled hamstring, for instance warming and relaxing the soft tissue and stretching out muscles and that are shortened, tightened and painful, helping to significantly speed up recovery.
